Cowell was born in Lambeth, London and increased in Elstree, Hertfordshire. His father, Eric Phillip Cowell (1918â????1999), was an estate agent developer and music industry executive; his mother, Julie Brett (n??©e Josie Dalglish), is a former ballet dancer and socialite. Cowell's paternal grandma and grandpa, Joseph Cowell and Esther Malinsky, were English Jews, [5] together with his maternal grandfather has been Scottish. He has one brother and three half-brothers; younger brother Nicholas Cowell, half-brother Kim Cowell, half-brother Tony Cowell and half-brother Michael Cowell. Cowell attended Radlett Preparatory School along with the independent Dover College as did his brother, but left after taking GCE U levels. He passed in British Language and Literature and attended Windsor Technical Higher education where he gained an additional GCE in Sociology. [7] At the age of 17, he dated product Paula Hamilton. He worked for Iain Burton, manager of choreographer Arlene Phillips, co-founder associated with dance group Hot Chat and of nascent independent record label Fanfare Notes. Cowell worked with Burton for eight years at Fanfare when he achieved his first real success in the music industry, becoming a partner and building Fanfare to a highly successful 'indie' take label. Fanfare had numerous top ten hits with various pop artists and particularly Sinitta, selling a lot more than 500, 000 copies with her debut single "So Macho", plus more than 500, 000 replications of her album Rondo Veneziano. Following in 1984, Cowell and Burton met up with Pete Waterman for the very first time.

He also released various novelty recordings featuring names like Teletubbies, wrestlers of WWE Zig and Zag along with the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, that were huge successes. [3] Within 2002, Cowell set in place another label, Syco Music, which later became component of Columbia Records and Sony BMG Music Entertainment. Artists such as Leona Lewis, Il Divo and contestants from the X Factor and America's Got Talent are released with Syco.
