Cowell was born in Lambeth, London and increased in Elstree, Hertfordshire. Cowell attended Radlett Preparatory School along with the independent Dover College as did his brother, but left after taking GCE U levels. He passed in British Language and Literature and attended Windsor Technical Higher education where he gained an additional GCE in Sociology. [7] At the age of 17, he dated product Paula Hamilton. He worked for Iain Burton, manager of choreographer Arlene Phillips, co-founder associated with dance group Hot Chat and of nascent independent record label Fanfare Notes. Cowell worked with Burton for eight years at Fanfare when he achieved his first real success in the music industry, becoming a partner and building Fanfare to a highly successful 'indie' take label.
